It was created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone for Comedy Central. The show follows four boys named Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman, and Kenny McCormick. These boys live in a fictional town in the snowy Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The show is known for its dark humor and satire. Satire is a way of using humor to mock or comment on real-world topics. The creators use this to look at religion, politics, and many other subjects. They want to make people laugh by showing all sides of a story.

Making the show is a very fast process.

The very first episode used real paper cutouts for animation. Today, the team uses computer software like Autodesk Maya to make the characters move. Most other cartoons take many months to finish an episode. However, the South Park team can finish an episode in just one week. Some episodes are even done in only three or four days. This speed happens because most of the work is done in one office. This allows the creators to respond quickly to things happening in the world.

This show began with two short films called The Spirit of Christmas. The first was made in 1992 and the second in 1995. The second short became one of the first viral videos on the internet. This popularity helped Parker and Stone start their television series. They originally talked to the Fox network about the show. However, they had a disagreement over a character named Mr. Hankey. Because they could not agree, they moved to Comedy Central instead. The first episode, "Cartman Gets an Anal Probe," aired on August 13, 1997.

There are many interesting facts about the characters and the town. The town is based on the look of Fairplay, Colorado. The characters are often based on the creators themselves. For example, Stan is modeled after Parker, and Kyle is modeled after Stone. The character Kenny wears a parka that hides most of his face. In the first five seasons, Kenny died in almost every episode. He would always come back in the next one without a clear reason. The boys have been in the fourth grade since the fourth season.

South Park has become a huge part of television history. It has won many awards, including five Primetime Emmy Awards. It also won a prestigious Peabody Award. In 2013, TV Guide named it the tenth greatest TV cartoon ever. The show even had a movie in 1999 called South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. This movie was very successful and was even nominated for an Academy Award. Even after many years, the show continues to be renewed for new seasons and specials.
