It is made by fermenting regular cream. Fermenting means letting tiny living things called bacteria change the cream. These bacteria turn the cream sour and thick. This is a natural way to keep the food safe.

Making sour cream involves many steps. First, makers check the fat in the cream. It must have at least 18% milk fat. Next, they add things called stabilizers. These help the cream stay smooth and thick. They also stop liquid from separating when the jar moves. Then, the cream goes through pasteurization. This is a way to heat the cream to kill bad bacteria. After that, they add a starter culture. This is a group of good bacteria. They sit in the cream for 18 hours. This makes the cream reach the right level of sourness.

People use sour cream in many ways. You might see it on tacos, nachos, or burritos.
