A sonnet is a special kind of poem.

It has fourteen lines. These lines follow a set pattern of rhymes. The word comes from an Italian word for sound.

Long ago, poets in Sicily made this form. One man named Giacomo da Lentini is credited with its start. Some say it grew from older Arabic poetry. Later, the poet Petrarch made it very famous. He wrote hundreds of sonnets about his love for a woman named Laura.

A typical sonnet has two main parts. The first part often asks a question. The second part gives an answer. At the ninth line, the poem makes a change. This change is called a volta, or a turn. It can change the mood or the tone.

Many famous people wrote sonnets. The painter Michelangelo was one. Even the scientist Galileo wrote them. In Spain, Lope de Vega wrote about 3,000 sonnets.

Sonnets traveled to the Americas too. Poets there used them to describe beautiful landscapes. Today, people still use this old form to share new ideas.
