These acids help make changes in chemicals. Scientists call them catalysts. A catalyst helps a reaction happen. Many solid acids are zeolites. Zeolites are special materials.

Some solid acids are made of metal oxides. These include titania and zirconia. Other solid acids are called Brønsted acids. One example is polystyrene sulfonate.

Factories use these acids in many ways. They use them to make fuel. This is called cracking. They also help make fine chemicals.

One way they work is called alkylation. This joins benzene and ethylene. This makes ethylbenzene. They also help make alkylamines. They do this by using alcohols. Solid acids can even work in fuel cells. Fuel cells help make power. These solid tools are very useful in big factories.
