space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Sun makes tiny bits called neutrinos. These bits come from the Sun's core.

They are made by nuclear fusion. This is a way that small parts join together to make power.

Most neutrinos come from the proton-proton chain. This is a set of steps that makes 91% of the neutrinos.

For a long time, there was a mystery. Scientists expected to see many neutrinos on Earth. But they only found a few. This was called the solar neutrino problem.

In 1968, the Homestake experiment showed this gap. It found less than 20% of the expected number.

Scientists soon found the answer. Neutrinos can change their flavor. Flavor means the type of neutrino. They change as they travel to Earth. This is called neutrino oscillation.

Experiments in Canada and Japan proved this. Now we know why they seemed to go missing. We can use them to study the Sun's core.
