The city is globally famous for Solapuri chadars and towels. These textiles were the first products in Maharashtra to receive a Geographical Indication tag. However, exports have recently declined due to quality issues. Besides textiles, Solapur is a major producer of beedis, which are a type of cigarette. Agriculture also thrives here, specifically with large-scale pomegranate farming. The National Research Centre on Pomegranate (NRCP) is located in the city to support this industry.

Solapur's history is marked by many different ruling dynasties. These included the Andhrabhratyas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Yadavas, and Bahamanis. The name 'Solapur' likely comes from the Marathi words 'Sola' (sixteen) and 'Pura' (village). This refers to the sixteen villages that originally formed the area.

These villages, such as Aadilpur and Ranapur, have since merged into the Solapur Municipal Corporation. Ancient inscriptions suggest the town was once called 'Sonnalage' or 'Sonalipur'. One inscription found in the Solapur fort even identifies the town as Sandalpur. The British rulers later pronounced the name as Solapur.

The city holds a deep significance in India's struggle for independence. During the movement, freedom fighters in Solapur showed great bravery. On 6 April 1930, they hoisted the Indian national flag on the Municipal Council building. This was a unique event that occurred before many other places in the country. This period of struggle led to the execution of several individuals by the British Government. Because of these sacrifices, Solapur is known as "The City of Martyrs." The Municipal Council building, also called Indra Bhawan, was built by Rao Saheb Mallappa Warad.

Demographically, Solapur is a multicultural and multilingual metropolis. As of the 2011 census, the city population was 951,558. Including suburbs, the population reached 1,250,000 by 2012. The city features a tri-linguistic blend of Marathi, Kannada, and Telugu.
