The city is located near the geometric center of the quadrilateral connecting India's four major metros. This includes Chennai, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Kolkata. Because of this, the British used the Zero Mile Stone in Nagpur to measure distances across the subcontinent. The landscape features various geological structures. The underlying rock strata include crystalline metamorphic rocks like gneiss, schist, and granite.

In the northern parts, you will find yellowish sandstones and clays from the lower Gondwana formations. The soil varies from granular, sandy deposits near the Kanhan River to alluvial clay in low-lying areas.

Water plays a significant role in the city's layout and environment. Nagpur is named after the Nag River, which flows through the urban area.

The city contains several natural and artificial lakes. Ambazari Lake is the largest natural lake found in the city.

Other notable water bodies include Gorewada Lake and Telankhedi Lake. Some lakes, such as Sonegaon and Gandhisagar, were created by historical rulers. The natural drainage of the city is formed by the Nag River, the Pilli Nadi, and various nallas. These water systems help define the local topography and the city's greenery.

The history of the region stretches back 3,000 years to the 8th century BCE.

Early evidence includes Mehir burial sites that show a megalithic culture existed there. The name "Nagpur" first appeared in a 10th-century copper-plate inscription from the nearby Wardha District. Over many centuries, the region was ruled by various dynasties. These included the Vakatakas, the Badami Chalukyas, and the Rashtrakutas. In the 17th century, the Mughal Empire held influence, though the Gond kingdom of Deogarh managed local administration.
