It was written by Yasunari Kawabata. This story is a classic piece of literature. The Nobel Committee even mentioned it in 1968. That was the same year Kawabata won the Nobel Prize. The book is a sad tale about love. It follows a man named Shimamura. He travels to a remote town with hot springs. These hot springs are called onsen. The story begins on a moving train. Shimamura watches a young woman named Yoko. He sees her eyes in the window's reflection. He also hears her lovely voice. Shimamura is going to the onsen to meet Komako. Komako is a geisha. A geisha is a person with special skills. She falls in love with Shimamura. This is difficult because of geisha traditions. Traditions say they should not have emotional attachments. The book shows their complicated relationship through many talks.

Kawabata had a very special way of writing. He did not write the whole book at once. He often wrote in parts called segments. He would publish a part in a magazine. Then he would rewrite it and add more. He changed titles and content many times. He even worked on the book after long breaks. He published different versions in many different journals. This helped him make the story much better over time.

The history of the book spans many years. The first part appeared in January 1935. He published more segments through May 1937. He took a three-year break from the work. He started again in 1940 and 1941. In 1946, he merged two sections together. He added another piece in 1947. Finally, the novel reached its final form in 1948. This version joined nine separate works together. Kawabata even visited the town of Yuzawa to work.

This book links the old world with the new. You will see modern things like trains. There are also snowplows and electric lights. Kawabata thought these things belonged in traditional Japan. The book also feels like haiku poetry. Haiku is a short form of Japanese poetry. Many people call this book a masterpiece. It shows how beauty can feel very lonely. It can also make a person feel lost in a dream.
