It was written by Yasunari Kawabata. He won the Nobel Prize for his writing. The story takes place in a snowy town. This town has hot springs, which are called onsen.

A man named Shimamura travels there by train. On the ride, he sees a woman named Yoko. He notices her eyes in the window's reflection. Shimamura goes to the town to see Komako. She is a geisha. A geisha is a person with special skills. Komako falls in love with Shimamura. This is hard because of geisha traditions.

The book shows how modern things and old ways live together. You might see a train or an electric light. Kawabata wrote this book in many parts. He added new parts and changed titles over many years. He finally finished the full version in 1948. The book also shows how beauty can feel sad. It can make a person feel lonely or lost. Some people call this book a masterpiece. They say it is a very fine story.
