Snow

earth science Maturity 7-9 Vital Level 3 Next article →

Snow is made of tiny ice crystals. These crystals grow inside cold clouds. They start when water droplets freeze around a small particle. This particle is called a nucleus. The crystals grow as they fall through the air. They can take many shapes. Some look like flat plates. Others look like long needles or columns. Most snowflakes are clusters of these crystals. We call these clusters aggregates.

Snow can fall in many ways. Sometimes, cold air moves over warm lake water. This makes lake-effect snow. This snow can be very heavy. Wind can also push moist air up a mountain. This makes snow fall on the mountain sides.

When snow hits the ground, it piles up. It can form big drifts. If it stays cold for a long time, it can turn into a glacier.
