An avalanche is a fast flow of snow down a slope.

It can happen on a hill or a mountain. Many things can start an avalanche. Heavy snow can make the snowpack too heavy. Rain or earthquakes can also cause them. Sometimes, people or animals trigger them.

There are two main kinds of avalanches. Slab avalanches happen when a thick block of snow breaks. This often happens when a weak layer under the snow fails. Loose snow avalanches happen with snow that is not packed tight. Large avalanches can move very fast. They can even mix with air to make a powder snow avalanche.

An avalanche follows a specific path. It begins at a starting point on a steep slope. Then, it moves down a track. Finally, it reaches a runout zone where it stops.

Avalanches can be dangerous to life and property. Because of this, people work hard to control them and stay safe.
