Snake River

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Snake River is a major river in the Pacific Northwest.

It is the largest tributary of the Columbia River. A tributary is a smaller river that flows into a larger one. The Snake River is the twelfth largest river in the United States. It provides about one-fifth of the water that the Columbia River carries to the ocean.

This river is a vital part of the landscape. It helps shape the land across several different states.

The river begins in the Rocky Mountains of Wyoming. It starts near the southern border of Yellowstone National Park.

From there, it flows through the Teton Wilderness and Jackson Hole. The water travels through the dry Snake River Plain in Idaho.

It also cuts through the deep Hells Canyon. This canyon is one of the deepest in North America. It is almost one-third deeper than the Grand Canyon.

Finally, the river flows through the Palouse Hills in Washington.

Many things changed the river over millions of years. Volcanic activity once covered the area with basalt rock.

During the last Ice Age, huge floods changed the land too. These floods helped create the Snake River Canyon. They also formed the famous Shoshone Falls.

Some people call this waterfall the "Niagara of the West." In 1805, Lewis and Clark were the first non-natives to see the river. Later, fur trappers explored the area for beaver.

People have lived near the river for a very long time. Indigenous tribes like the Shoshone and Nez Perce used the salmon for food.

In the 1860s, many settlers arrived after gold was found. This led to many changes for the local tribes. Later, people built many dams to make electricity.

These dams also help big ships move goods. For example, the lower dams create a path to Lewiston, Idaho.

Today, the river is still a very important place for nature. It is home to the longest sockeye salmon run in the world.

These fish swim all the way from the Pacific Ocean to Redfish Lake. Human activities like dams have made life harder for these fish. Because of this, many groups work to help the fish populations grow again.
