Most ores are not pure. They are mixed with things like oxygen or sulfur. To get the metal, we use a way called smelting. This uses high heat and a special material. This material is a reducing agent. It helps pull the oxygen away from the metal.

Sometimes, we must heat the ore first. This step is called roasting. Roasting gets rid of sulfur. It leaves behind an oxide. This makes it easier to get the metal later.

During smelting, we often add flux. Flux is a material that binds to unwanted parts. These parts turn into a waste called slag. Slag is easy to remove.

Some smelters use a blast furnace. This makes pig iron. We can turn that iron into steel. Other plants use electricity to make aluminum. These are called aluminum smelters.
