Slice of life

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some stories show the small parts of real life. We call this "slice of life." These stories do not always have a big fight or a huge plot. Instead, they show everyday moments.

In plays, this style is called naturalism. A man named Jean Jullien helped start this idea. He said a play is a slice of life put on stage with art. He wanted plays to make people think. He did not want them just to laugh. In these plays, the story might not end when the curtain falls. It lets the viewer wonder what happens next.

Books can do this too. Some writers use the way ordinary people talk. They show small details very carefully. They do not try to judge the characters.

In anime and manga, slice of life is very popular. These stories often take place in schools. They focus on how people get along. Some stories are very light and peaceful. We call this "nichijō-kei." These stories show the heartwarming parts of daily life. They can even make people want to visit the real places shown in the art.
