The Sistine Chapel is a central site within the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City.

It serves as the official chapel for the Papal Chapel, a large body of the papal household. This group once included about 200 people, such as clerics and Vatican officials. The chapel is also the venue for the papal conclave. A conclave is the formal process used to elect a new pope. Because of its religious functions and its immense art, the chapel is a major site of global significance.

One of the most famous mechanisms occurring in the chapel is the conclave election.

During this event, the College of Cardinals meets to vote. To communicate the results to the public, a chimney is installed in the roof. The color of the smoke provides a specific signal. White smoke is produced by burning only the ballots. This tells the world that a new pope has been elected. Black smoke is produced by burning the ballots with wet straw. This signal means no candidate has reached the required two-thirds vote.

The interior of the chapel is organized into distinct decorative and architectural tiers.

The side walls feature three main tiers of frescoes. The central tier contains two major cycles of paintings. These cycles depict the Life of Moses and the Life of Christ. Above these walls, the ceiling serves as a massive artistic canvas. The ceiling is a shallow cross vault, also called a flattened groin vault. It is intersected by smaller vaults above each of the six tall windows. The floor uses a style called opus alexandrinum, which uses marble and colored stone in patterns.

The history of the chapel began with the demolition of the Cappella Magna.

This older building had been recorded as existing since 1368. However, by the time of Pope Sixtus IV, it was in a ruinous state. Its walls were leaning and required replacement. Pope Sixtus IV commissioned the new chapel between 1473 and 1481. The architect Baccio Pontelli designed the structure. On 15 August 1483, the first mass was celebrated there. This ceremony consecrated the chapel and dedicated it to the Virgin Mary.

Artistic development in the chapel occurred in several major stages.

In the late 15th century, a team of Renaissance painters decorated the walls. This team included Sandro Botticelli, Pietro Perugino, and Domenico Ghirlandaio. They completed their work by 1482. Later, Michelangelo transformed the space between 1508 and 1512. He painted the famous ceiling under the patronage of Pope Julius II. He later returned to paint "The Last Judgment" between 1535 and 1541. These works are considered major accomplishments of human civilization.

The physical dimensions of the chapel are quite large and carefully proportioned.

The building is approximately 35 meters long and 35 meters wide. The ceiling rises high above the main floor level. The proportions of the interior follow specific Renaissance mathematical ratios. For example, the width is one-third of the length. The height is one-half of the length. These proportions reflect a growing interest in the Classical heritage of ancient Rome. The exterior remains unadorned, as was common in many Italian buildings of that era.

The chapel connects deeply to the political and religious systems of the Vatican.

It acts as a bridge between sacred ritual and administrative necessity. For instance, the chapel hosts services from the Papal Calendar. It also houses the Sistine Chapel Choir, which has performed famous pieces like the "Miserere" by Gregorio Allegri. Even the modern technology used during conclaves connects to this tradition. Electronic signal jamming equipment is placed under a raised wooden floor. This ensures the secrecy of the voting process while protecting the historic marble floor.
