They first appeared about 50 million years ago during the Eocene epoch. Some of their earliest relatives were pig-like animals that lived on land and in water. Over a long time, they changed into the aquatic animals we see today. One famous relative was the Steller's sea cow. This huge animal lived in the cold Bering Sea. Sadly, it was driven to extinction by overhunting in 1768.

Manatees can hold their breath for 15 minutes while they rest. Dugongs can hold their breath for up to six minutes. Because they have thin skin or little blubber, they must stay warm. If the water gets too cold, they migrate to warmer places. Some West Indian manatees in Florida visit power plants to stay warm in winter.

They are also related to other animals like elephants and hyraxes. Scientists use DNA to show these family links.

They inhabit diverse watery environments, including rivers, swamps, estuaries, and coastal marine waters. These animals are essential to their ecosystems because they graze on aquatic vegetation. Today, the order Sirenia includes only three living species. These species are divided into two distinct families: Dugongidae and Trichechidae.

The Dugongidae family contains only the dugong. The Trichechidae family includes the Amazonian, West Indian, and West African manatees.

To survive in the water, sirenians have developed several specialized physical adaptations. Their bodies are fusiform, which means they are shaped like a torpedo to reduce drag.

They also possess pachyostosis, a condition where their bones are extremely dense and bulky. These heavy bones contain little to no bone marrow. This density acts as ballast to counteract the buoyancy provided by their blubber or thick skin. This allows them to remain suspended just below the water's surface. Their lungs are unlobed and extend along the entire vertebral column. This helps them control buoyancy and prevents them from tipping over while swimming.

Movement and feeding are also highly specialized for a life spent submerged. Sirenians use their tails to propel themselves through the water with up-and-down strokes. Manatees possess paddle-shaped tails, while dugongs have notched flukes similar to dolphins. They use paddle-like forelimbs to assist with steering and slowing down. For feeding, they use strong lips to pull seagrasses from the bottom. This diet is quite large; they can consume 10% to 15% of their body weight every day. Manatees are polyphyodonts, meaning they continuously replace their teeth. As their teeth wear down from eating abrasive plants, new teeth move in from the back of the jaw.

Sirenians have a deep evolutionary history spanning tens of millions of years. They first appeared in the fossil record during the Early Eocene, approximately 50 million years ago.

The earliest known sirenian was a quadruped named Pezosiren. Other early families, such as Protosirenidae and Prorastomidae, consisted of amphibious, pig-like creatures. These ancient groups died out at the end of the Eocene epoch. The Dugongidae and Trichechidae families later emerged from these lineages. The Dugongidae and Trichechidae diverged from one another during the late Eocene or early Oligocene, roughly 30 to 35 million years ago.

One of the most remarkable members of this order was the Steller's sea cow. This species was much larger than modern sirenians, reaching massive lengths and weights. It was specialized for the cold subarctic temperatures of the Bering Sea. It lived in areas ranging from Alaska to Japan. Unfortunately, the Steller's sea cow was driven to extinction by overhunting in 1768. This serves as a historical reminder of how human activity can impact even the largest species.

Modern sirenians are found in various warm, shallow habitats around the globe.

The Amazonian manatee lives exclusively in the freshwater of the Amazon River Basin. The West African manatee inhabits murky mangroves and coastal flats in West Africa. Dugongs are found in the Indo-West Pacific Ocean across more than 40 countries. Because they have thin layers of blubber or thick skin, they are very sensitive to temperature. If water temperatures drop too low, they must migrate to warmer areas. Some West Indian manatees even seek warmth near power plants in Florida during the winter.

Scientifically, sirenians are part of the clade Paenungulata. This makes them close relatives of elephants (Proboscidea) and hyraxes (Hyracoidea). This relationship was established by George Gaylord Simpson in 1945 based on anatomical evidence. They are also grouped within the larger cohort Afrotheria. Today, researchers use molecular phylogeny, or the study of genetic relationships, to confirm these connections. Understanding these evolutionary links helps scientists protect the diverse species that remain in our oceans and rivers.
