These sounds warn people of danger. Some sirens are on fire trucks. Others sit on tall poles to warn a whole town.

There are two main kinds of sirens. The first kind is a mechanical siren. These use a spinning part called a rotor.

As the rotor spins, it lets air through small holes. This air flow makes a loud sound. Many sirens use an electric motor to spin the rotor. To help the sound travel far, a horn is often added. The horn aims the sound waves in one direction.

The second kind is an electronic siren. These use speakers to make noise. They can make many different sounds. They often copy the sound of mechanical sirens. This helps people recognize them quickly.

In the past, people used bells to call firefighters. Some sirens even used codes. These codes told firefighters where a fire was located. Today, many towns test their sirens at noon. People sometimes call these "noon whistles."
