Silver iodide

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Silver iodide is a bright yellow salt.

Sometimes it looks grey. This happens because of tiny bits of silver. These bits appear when light hits the salt. This quality is called photosensitivity. It means the salt reacts to light. People use this to make photos.

Silver iodide also helps make rain. This way of changing weather is called cloud seeding. People put the salt into clouds. The salt looks like ice. This helps the water in clouds freeze. Each test uses 10 to 50 grams of the salt. About 11,000 kg are used every year. Scientists make this salt in a lab. They mix two liquids together. A yellow solid forms very fast. This solid is a mix of two parts. One part is called the beta phase. The other part is called the alpha phase. The parts change based on heat. The salt can also work as an antiseptic. This helps keep things clean.
