Silver iodide is a bright yellow salt.

It is an inorganic compound with the formula AgI. Sometimes it looks grey instead of yellow. This happens because of tiny bits of silver inside it. These bits appear when light hits the salt. This quality is called photosensitivity. It means the salt reacts to light. This property is useful for silver-based photography.

This salt can change its shape based on heat. Below 420 K, it stays in a stable form called the beta phase. This phase is found in nature as the mineral iodargyrite. Above 420 K, the alpha phase becomes more stable. In this alpha phase, silver ions move very fast. This allows for fast ion conduction. The change between these forms is like the melting of a silver lattice.

Scientists can make silver iodide in a lab. They react an iodide solution with a silver ion solution. For example, they might use potassium iodide and silver nitrate. A yellowish solid forms very quickly. This solid is a mixture of the alpha and beta phases. To get only the beta phase, they use hydroiodic acid and water. To get the alpha phase, they use silver nitrate and water.

Silver iodide is very helpful for changing the weather. This process is known as cloud seeding. The crystals in the beta phase look like ice. This allows them to start freezing through heterogeneous nucleation. This is a way to make water freeze. Each seeding experiment uses 10 to 50 grams of the salt. About 11,000 kg are used for cloud seeding every year.

People use this substance for many different jobs. It can work as an antiseptic to keep things clean. However, people must be careful with it. Extreme exposure can lead to a condition called argyria. This causes skin or body tissue to change color. This is a serious thing to watch for.
