This place is very important for the world economy. In 2015, the San Jose area had the third-highest wealth per person globally. It is home to thousands of new startup companies. It also hosts over 30 of the world's largest corporations.

The name Silicon Valley comes from a specific chemical element.

This element is called silicon. It is used to make transistors and integrated circuit chips. These chips are the tiny parts that make computers work. The region helped develop many important tools like the microprocessor. It also saw the birth of the microcomputer. This way of working makes the area a leader in hardware and software. Because it is so famous, people use the name to describe high-tech research everywhere. This has inspired other places to build similar technology centers.

Before the tech boom, this land looked very different.

Up through the 1960s, it was a massive fruit-growing area. People called it the "Valley of Heart's Delight." It was one of the largest places in the world for packing fruit. The valley grew many things like grapes, citrus, nuts, and cherries. There were even 39 different fruit canneries in the region. It was a place of orchards instead of office buildings. This change from farms to tech is a huge part of its history.

Many things helped the tech industry grow so fast.

Stanford University played a central role in this growth. A leader named Frederick Terman was very important. He was the dean of engineering starting in 1946. Terman encouraged students and teachers to start their own businesses. In 1951, he helped create the Stanford Industrial Park. This allowed high-tech companies to work right next to the university. This created a culture where people worked together to invent new things.

Success also came from money and smart laws.

Venture capital is money used to help new businesses grow. The Bay Area accounts for one-third of all this investment in the U.S. Many of these investors work on Sand Hill Road in Menlo Park. California also had laws that let workers move freely between jobs. This helped ideas spread quickly from one company to another. Even the military helped by spending money on new technology. These pieces all fit together to create the world's most famous tech hub.
