People can buy things through online auctions or instant sales. The instant sales are often called "buy it now" options. When a sale happens, the company charges a fee to the seller. This is known as a commission.

This system allows individuals, large companies, and even governments to trade. They can buy almost any item that is legal and not controversial.

Using the site is a simple way to find or sell things. A buyer can bid on an item in an auction to try and win it. They can also choose to pay a set price right away.

After a trade is done, both people can rate and review each other. This creates a reputation system so everyone knows who is trustworthy. Software developers can even build new apps that connect to eBay. This is done using something called an API, which helps different computer programs talk to each other. Merchants can also earn money through special marketing programs.

Pierre Omidyar started the company in September 1995.

He originally called the website AuctionWeb. He first created it as a hobby to make some extra money. One of the very first things sold was a broken laser pointer. It sold for $14.83 to a person who collected broken laser pointers. In 1997, the name changed to eBay. This name came from Omidyar's consulting firm, Echo Bay Technology Group. He simply shortened the name because the full web address was already taken by a gold mining company.

eBay has grown into a huge global business over many years. In 2021, there were about 17 million sellers using the site. By 2023, the company reported 132 million active buyers worldwide. These buyers handled $73 billion in total transactions during that year. About 48% of all those sales happened in the United States. In 2023, the company's revenue was 13.81% of the total sales volume. This is often called the "take rate" by the company.

Many things you use every day might be found on eBay. You might see someone selling rare toys like Beanie Babies. In 1997, these toys made up 10% of all listings on the site. People also use the site to buy travel items like hotel rooms or cruise berths. Some companies even use eBay to help manage their stores. It is a way to connect people who have things with people who want them. This connection happens through websites and mobile apps on phones.
