Most people live in large cities rather than the countryside. The city of Katowice serves as the capital for the region. It is part of a huge urban area with 2.2 million people. This makes it one of the biggest city groups in Poland.

The land in this province changes quite a lot. In the south, you will find the Beskid Mountains. The highest peak there is called Pilsko.

The middle of the region is filled with the Silesian Upland. To the northeast, the land is hilly and made of limestone. These hills are known as the Polish Jura. You can find many places for rock climbing here. The landscape offers many different things to see and do.

This region has a very long and complex history. The province was first created in 1920. At that time, it was an independent area for Upper Silesia. Later, the borders changed many times during different wars. In 1938, the area grew larger when new lands were added. During World War II, the area was taken over by Germany. After the war, the government made new rules for the region. In 1999, a major reform created the province we see today.

Many interesting things can be found throughout the land. You can visit the Jasna Góra shrine in Częstochowa.
