A siesta is a short nap taken during the early afternoon.

It is a common tradition in many warm-weather countries. The term can describe the nap itself or the time period. This period usually occurs between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. People use this time for sleep, leisure, or midday meals.

Some people also use this time for sex or other social activities. This rest period serves as a mental tool to help people unwind. It helps individuals return to work feeling refreshed and avoids burnout.

Several biological and environmental factors make the afternoon an ideal time for rest. The timing of human sleep depends on homeostatic sleep propensity and circadian rhythms. Homeostatic pressure is the internal drive to sleep that grows after waking up. Circadian rhythms are the body's internal clock that determines the best time for restorative sleep. Professor Charles Czeisler notes that the circadian system can override the drive for sleep. This creates a natural dip in energy when the sleep drive is high.

Additionally, high temperatures and heavy midday meals contribute to post-lunch drowsiness.

Different cultures around the world have unique names and methods for this practice. In Northern Italy, the nap is called riposo. In Southern Italy, people use the terms pennichella or pisolino. Southern Italians also call the period controra, meaning "counter hour." In this view, the time is considered magical and belongs to spirits.

In Dalmatia, the nap is known as pižolot. In Egypt and the Middle East, the practice is called taaseela or qailulah. This is related to the Islamic practice of Qailulah, which is encouraged by the Prophet Muhammad. This midday rest helps Muslims stay awake for early morning religious acts.

In China, the afternoon nap is a common habit for many people. Surveys show that approximately two-thirds of the Chinese population takes these naps. The average duration for a nap in China is about 30 minutes.

In the United States and the United Kingdom, people often call a short sleep a "power nap." This term was coined by social psychologist James Maas. It has been recognized by other researchers like Sara Mednick. Even in colder regions like Patagonia, the custom of napping is practiced.

The siesta has a history that stretches back to Roman times. It evolved along the Mediterranean coastline to help nobles manage the noon heat. The 5th-century letters of Sidonius mention that the siesta after dinner was often slight. The word "siesta" itself comes from a Latin phrase meaning the "sixth hour." Since Romans counted from dawn, the sixth hour was midday.

In the past, even the Russian Emperor Charlemagne was described as taking midday rests. Einhard's writings say the emperor would rest for two or three hours in the summer.

In modern Spain and Portugal, the tradition is changing among working adults. A 2009 survey showed that 58.6 percent of people in these countries never take a siesta. Only 16.2 percent reported taking a nap on a daily basis. This is a decrease from a 1998 poll, which showed a 7 percent higher daily rate. Many Spaniards actually work very long days, often 11 hours long.

In cities, the shift away from siestas is linked to modern economies and urbanization. Many people now take a long lunch break instead of a traditional nap.

There are also interesting connections between napping and physical health. Some studies in Greece suggest that people who nap may have less risk of heart attacks. Research has even associated the siesta habit with a 37 percent reduction in coronary mortality. This might be due to reduced cardiovascular stress from daytime sleep.

However, scientists are still studying these results. They want to know if the health benefits come from the nap itself or other habits. For example, people who nap might simply have different levels of physical activity. Regardless, the siesta remains a significant part of many global cultures.
