There are a few reasons why people take a siesta. Warm temperatures can make the afternoon heat feel unbearable. A heavy lunch can also make people feel drowsy. This custom has a very long history. It began during Roman times along the Mediterranean coast. Roman nobles took naps to handle the midday heat. We see mentions of this in letters from the 5th century. The word itself comes from a Latin phrase. It means a rest at the sixth hour of the day. This puts the rest time around noon.
