Siemens (unit)

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Electricity flows through many things. Some parts let it flow easily. We use a unit to measure this flow. This unit is called the siemens. It is named after Ernst Werner von Siemens. We use a big S as its symbol. We do not capitalize the name siemens. However, we do capitalize the symbol S. This helps us not mix it up with seconds. Seconds use a small s.

A siemens measures conductance. Conductance is how well electricity flows. It is the opposite of resistance. Resistance is how much a part stops the flow. One siemens is the same as one mho. The name mho is just ohm spelled backwards. A man named William Thomson suggested this name. He said you could say mho by playing a record backwards. Today, scientists mostly use the word siemens.

We can also measure electrical conductivity. This is how well a material carries power. We measure it in siemens per metre. This tells us how much flow happens in a certain space.
