Sid Meier

Sid Meier is a famous maker of video games. He is a programmer and a designer. He is known for creating strategy games. These are games where players must plan and think carefully.

Meier wants his games to be very fun. He says that finding the "fun parts" is the hardest job. He plays his own games over and over to check this. He focuses on the fun parts of a simulation. He leaves out the parts that are not fun. This helps people enjoy the worlds he builds.

Making a game involves many steps. Meier often does much of the work himself. In the beginning, he did the art and the sound too. He worked with an artist named Michael Haire later on. Meier also uses a special game engine. He has been building this tool since 1996. He uses it to test his new ideas. He might show up at his office with a new prototype. This is a quick version of a game to see if it works. If a game is not fun enough, he might put it on a shelf. This happened with a game about dinosaurs.

Meier's career has a long history. He was born in 1954 in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. His family moved to Detroit, Michigan, when he was three. He studied history and computer science at the University of Michigan. He graduated with a degree in 1975. After college, he made systems for cash registers. In 1981, he got an Atari 800 computer. This helped him see how to make video games. He met Bill Stealey, who also liked games. Together, they started a company called MicroProse in 1982.

MicroProse made many famous titles. Meier programmed games like Hellcat Ace and Spitfire Ace. He also made flight games like F-15 Strike Eagle. In 1987, the game Sid Meier's Pirates! came out. This was the first game with his name in the title. Later, he made the famous Civilization series. The first game in that series came out in 1991. As of August 2024, that series has sold over 73 million copies. In 1997, Meier helped start a new company called Firaxis Games. He did this with Jeff Briggs and Brian Reynolds.

Many people admire Meier's work. He was put into the Hall of Fame by the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences. In 1996, a group called GameSpot called him one of the most influential people in gaming. He has even received a Lifetime Achievement Award. His life is documented in his book, Sid Meier's Memoir! He lives in Maryland with his wife, Susan. His son, Ryan, also works in the computer world. Meier's games connect history and science with play.
