This often happens around new people. Shy people may fear what others think of them. They might worry about being teased or rejected. This fear can cause a person to retreat or hide.

Shyness comes from many things. It can come from your genes. Genes are parts of your body passed down from parents. Some studies say shyness is partly genetic. It can also come from your environment. This means the way you are raised. For example, being teased by others can lead to shyness.

Shyness is not the same as introversion. An introvert chooses to avoid crowds. They just do not find them rewarding. But shy people feel distress in social spots. They feel fear or worry.

Shyness can change as you grow. Many children feel less shy by age 13. Some people stay shy for their whole lives. It can even affect how well students do in class. Shyness can make it hard to talk or make eye contact.
