Shivanasamudra Falls is a significant cluster of waterfalls located in the state of Karnataka, India.

The falls sit on the borders of Malavalli, Mandya, and Kollegala. They form a natural boundary between the Chamarajanagara and Mandya districts. These falls are part of the Kaveri River system. The river travels through the rocks and ravines of the Deccan Plateau before dropping off. This drop creates the massive waterfalls we see today. The area is also home to an island town. This town sits in the middle of the river. This location makes it the fourth largest island in the entire course of the Kaveri.

The falls are classified as a segmented waterfall. A segmented waterfall occurs when a river flow breaks into two or more separate channels. These channels then drop over a cliff side-by-side. In this case, the Kaveri River splits into western and eastern branches. The western branch creates the Gaganachukki Falls. This specific fall has a height of 90 metres. The eastern branch results in the Bharachukki Falls. These falls have a height of 69 metres.

While many people assume they are side-by-side, Bharachukki is actually a few kilometres to the south-west. The best time to observe the water flow is during the monsoon season. This occurs from July to October.

Shivanasamudra is famous for its history in power generation. It contains one of the first hydro-electric power stations in Asia. The concept for this project began in 1898. Alain Chartier Joly de Lotbiniere suggested tapping the water for power. He wanted to supply electricity to the machinery at the Kolar Gold Fields. The project was designed by Dewan Sir Sheshadri Iyer and Chief Engineer Sir M. Visvesvaraya. The station was commissioned by the Diwan of Mysore, Sir K. Seshadri Iyer. It began operating in 1902. By 1905, the power helped electrify the city of Bangalore.

The site also holds deep religious significance for many people. The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is located here and uses Hindu architectural styles. This temple is one of three important sites for the deity Ranganatha. The other two are the Adi Ranga temple in Srirangapatna and the Antya Ranga temple in Srirangam. At Shivanasamudra, the deity is known as Madhya Ranga. Devotees often call him Mohana Ranga or Jaganmohana Ranga. This name represents the youth form of the God. There are other ancient sites nearby as well. These include the Sri Someshwara Temple and the Vanadurga Devi temple.

History and local belief add layers to the landscape. It is said that the teacher Adi guru Sri Shankaracharya visited this place. He is believed to have established a "Sri Chakra" here. Some local traditions suggest the Someshwara Linga is much older than the Ranganatha idol. It is even believed that the Saptarshis performed worship at this Linga. These stories connect the natural geography to ancient spiritual history. The presence of these temples suggests that villages likely existed here for a very long time.

Many people visit the falls for sightseeing or cultural reasons. The location was even used as a filming site for the 1972 film Pakeezah. A famous song from that movie was filmed at the falls. Visitors can view the Gaganachukki falls from a specific watch tower. Most photographs of the twin falls are taken from this vantage point. You can also approach the falls from the Darga Hazrath Mardane Gaib. For those with special permission from the Karnataka Power Corporation, the power station is visitable. Visitors there can experience a British-built winch lift.

While the falls are beautiful, they can also be dangerous. There are many warnings posted around the area for a reason. Some people attempt to climb down the rocks to see the falls from the top or behind. This behavior has resulted in many fatal accidents. It is important to stay in safe areas and follow all posted signs. The combination of powerful water and steep rocks makes the site very risky for climbers. Respecting the natural power of the Kaveri is essential for anyone visiting the falls.
