Shin loved making music that felt unique and special. He helped create a sound called psychedelic soul. This style helped change how people heard popular music in Korea. He wanted to share new sounds with everyone.

Shin learned to play the guitar by himself. He actually tried to learn the violin first, but it did not work out. In 1957, he began playing at U.S. military bases in South Korea. He used the stage name Jackie Shin during these early shows. He heard American rock and jazz on the radio at the time. This inspired him to play many shows every month. He even formed the first South Korean rock band called Add4 in 1964.

His career had many ups and downs due to the government. In 1972, he wrote a song called "Beautiful Rivers and Mountains." He wrote it to praise the beauty of South Korea. This was a brave choice during a time of military rule. The police took his guitars and cut his long hair. Later, in 1975, he was arrested and sent to prison. His music was banned from being played for many years. Even during these hard times, he kept working as a songwriter.

Shin had many big successes throughout his long life. His album for The Pearl Sisters sold over 1 million copies. In 1974, his band Shin Joong Hyun & Yup Juns also sold over 1 million copies. In the 1990s, his music became very popular again. He opened a music club called Woodstock in 1986. He even performed at the Hollywood Bowl in the United States in 2008. These moments showed how much people loved his talent.

Today, we remember Shin for his huge impact on music. He received the Bogwan Order of Cultural Merit from the government. In 2017, he earned an honorary degree from Berklee College of Music. He was also the sixth person to get a special Fender Custom Shop Tribute guitar. This is a very high honor for a musician. His life shows how one person can change a whole culture. He helped build the foundation for Korean music to succeed globally.
