Many people call him the "King of Pop" in his country. He is a very important figure in K-pop music. His career has lasted for over fifty years. He has had number one hits in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and even the 2010s. This long success shows how much people love his music. He has even received the Eungwan Order of Cultural Merit for his work.

His journey into music began when he was just seven years old. He heard a musician named Ray Charles playing the harmonica. This moment inspired him to become a musician himself. He started his career playing the guitar in various rock bands. In 1968, he formed a rock band called Atkins. Later, he played in groups called Five Fingers and Kim Trio. These bands helped him learn how to perform rock music. He joined the Kim Trio in 1971 to play with other musicians.

Cho became a solo star in 1976. His first big single was "Come Back to Busan Port." This song became a huge hit in South Korea and Japan. People bought millions of copies of his music. In 1980, he became the first Korean singer to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York. He was also the first South Korean singer to perform in China in 1988. These moments helped him share his music with the whole world.

Music trends change as new stars arrive. After 1992, Cho's studio albums were not as successful as before. He decided to stop appearing on television for a while. Instead, he focused on performing live in large concerts. In 1993, his concert in Busan drew one million people. This was a record for South Korea. In 1994, he became the first South Korean singer to sell over one million records. He even performed a rare concert in Pyongyang, North Korea, in 2005.

Cho Yong-pil has stayed popular even in recent years. In 2013, he released his 19th album called "Hello." It reached number one on the music charts. His song "Bounce" won many awards that same year. He even won Singer of the Year in a survey by Gallup Korea. In 2018, he held special concerts for his 50th anniversary. He continues to make music, releasing his 20th album in 2024. His life shows how music can connect people for many decades.
