He was born in China in 1911. He spent his life studying shapes and how they change. People call him the "father of modern differential geometry." This means he helped build the foundation for how we study curves and surfaces. His ideas are still used by scientists today. They help people study things like gravity and tiny particles.

Geometry is the study of shapes, but Chern studied a special kind. He looked at how math works on complex, curvy spaces. One of his most famous ideas is called the Chern theorem. This work helped explain how shapes fit together in many dimensions. He also worked on things called Chern classes and Chern-Simons theory. These ideas are very important for physics. They help scientists understand how the whole universe might be put together.

Chern's journey began in China. He studied at Nankai University and Tsinghua University. In 1934, he earned a master's degree in math. This was the very first master's degree in math given in China. He then traveled to Europe to learn even more. He studied in Germany and France. In Germany, he worked with a man named Wilhelm Blaschke. In France, he met a famous mathematician named Élie-Joseph Cartan. He worked very hard to learn from these great teachers.

Life was not always easy for Chern. During World War II, he had to move to different parts of China. He lived in a place called Kunming for a while. Even though it was hard to talk to other scientists, he kept working. In 1943, he went to the United States. He worked at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. This was a big turning point for his career. Later, he taught at the University of Chicago and UC Berkeley. He even helped start a famous math center called MSRI in 1982.

Chern was a very respected leader in the math world. He won many big awards, like the Wolf Prize. In 2010, people created the Chern Medal to honor great mathematicians.

He also visited China many times to share his knowledge. He was a bridge between math in the East and the West. His life shows how curiosity can lead to amazing discoveries. Even though he did huge things, he said he liked "small problems."
