Shaving cream is a category of cosmetic products used to prepare skin for shaving.

The primary function of these creams is to provide lubrication for the skin. They also work to soften facial hair through a process called hydration. This hydration makes the hair much easier to cut with a razor. By creating a protective layer, these products help the razor slide smoothly. This process reduces the friction between the blade and the skin during the shave.

There are several distinct types of shaving preparations available today. Lather shaving cream is a traditional option that requires a shaving brush. When a user works this cream with a brush, it creates a thick lather. Another type is latherless shaving cream, which is also called brushless or non-aerosol cream. These do not contain soap and therefore do not produce bubbles. Instead, they use an oil-in-water mixture combined with wetting agents and humectants.

A third type is aerosol shaving cream, often known as shaving foam. These are essentially liquid lather creams dispensed from pressurized cans using propellants.

To understand how these products function, we must look at their chemical makeup. Most shaving creams are emulsions consisting of oils, water, and surfactants. Surfactants are substances that help mix oil and water together. Many formulations contain between 20% and 30% soap, such as potassium or triethanolamine (TEA). They also include up to about 10% glycerine, which acts as a humectant. A humectant is a substance that helps the lather stay moisturized and maintains a soft consistency.

Aerosols add another layer of complexity by including vegetable waxes and various oils. These cans use hydrocarbon propellants, which can make up about 10% of the product. While these hydrocarbons are flammable, the large amount of water in the cream keeps the mixture safe.

The history of beard preparation stretches back to ancient civilizations. Documentation from Sumer shows a rudimentary form of shaving cream was used there. This early substance was a combination of animal fat and wood alkali.

For many centuries, people relied on hard bars or sticks of shaving soap. Eventually, manufacturers began selling compounds of oils and soft soap in tubes. This shift made the grooming process more convenient for the average person.

Modern innovations have significantly changed how people access these products. In 1919, Frank Shields, a former professor at MIT, developed the first true shaving cream. He launched his product under the name Barbasol in the American market. This was a major innovation because it allowed men to shave without a brush. Initially, Barbasol was entirely packaged and filled by hand in Indianapolis. The brand remains in existence and is sold all over the world today.

The mid-20th century brought even more technological shifts to the industry. The first pressurized can of shaving cream was introduced in 1949 under the name Rise. This format became extremely popular very quickly. By the 1960s, pressurized cans had captured two-thirds of the American market. Even the chemistry of the propellants has evolved due to environmental concerns. Until the late 1990s, cans used chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) to push the cream out. Because CFCs affect the ozone layer, they were banned and replaced by gaseous hydrocarbons. These modern mixtures include substances like pentane, propane, butane, and isobutane.

Recent decades have seen the development of even more specialized textures. In the 1970s, shaving gel was introduced to the market. Later, in 1993, The Procter & Gamble Company patented a post-foaming gel composition. This specific type of gel turns into a foam only after it is applied to the skin. This allows the product to combine the beneficial properties of both gels and foams.

It offers a unique way to manage the shaving experience.

Shaving preparations are part of a much broader field of personal hygiene and skin care. They are closely related to other products like shaving soap and cold cream. It is also important to note how shaving products differ based on the method used. For example, people using electric or dry shaving methods do not want their hair to swell. Because hydration is not desired in those cases, those products use high amounts of alcohol. These formulations contain 50% to 80% alcohol to dry the skin and stiffen the hairs. Understanding these chemical differences helps explain why we use different tools for different types of grooming.
