Hair conditioner is a cosmetic product used to improve hair texture and appearance.

Its primary function is to reduce friction between individual hair strands. This reduction in friction allows for smoother brushing or combing. Without this smoothness, the process might cause damage to the scalp. Many products also advertise benefits like hair repair or strengthening. They may also aim to reduce the appearance of split ends. Conditioners come in many forms, including viscous liquids, gels, and creams. They also exist as thinner lotions or sprays.

Most people use conditioner after washing their hair with shampoo. The application process involves working the product into the hair. Users may rinse the product out after a short time. Alternatively, some products are designed to be left in the hair. The chemistry of these products relies heavily on the structure of hair. About 97% of hair consists of a protein called keratin. The surface of this keratin contains negatively charged amino acids.

To address these negative charges, conditioners use cationic surfactants. These are molecules with a positive charge. Their hydrophilic ends bind strongly to the keratin. This binding happens because the ends do not wash out completely. The hydrophobic ends then act as a new surface for the hair. This process helps create a smoother feel. Common examples of these surfactants include behentrimonium chloride and cetrimonium chloride. These ingredients change how the hair interacts with its environment.

There are several distinct types of conditioners available today. Deep conditioners, also known as hair masks, are very thick. They contain high levels of cationic surfactants. These surfactants bind to the hair and glue the surface scales together. This helps restore moisture and reduce breakage. These masks are usually applied for 30 to 45 minutes. Leave-in conditioners are much thinner to avoid weighing hair down. They are often used by people with naturally curly or kinky hair.

Other specialized types serve specific purposes. Rinse-out conditioners, or creme rinse, are the most common generic products. Hold conditioners use cationic polyelectrolyte polymers to keep hair in a specific shape. These function similarly to diluted hair gels. Cleansing conditioners are a newer category of product. They use a mix of amphoteric and cationic surfactants. These can replace shampoo or act as a pretreatment for damaged hair.

History shows that people have used natural oils for centuries. In the late Victorian era, men often used Macassar oil. This product was quite greasy. It required people to pin cloths called antimaccasars to chair headrests. These cloths protected upholstery from oil damage. In 1900, Edouard Pinaud presented Brilliantine at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. This product was meant to soften hair, beards, and moustaches.

Modern science has since added silicones and polymers to improve performance.

Many specific ingredients work together to provide different benefits. Acidifiers maintain a pH of about 3.5 to tighten the hair surface. This helps the hydrogen bonds between keratin molecules stay strong. Glossers, such as dimethicone, are polymers that reflect light to add shine. Moisturizers use humectants to hold moisture inside the hair. Some products even include sunscreens like benzophenone-4 to prevent color loss. Thermal protectors use heat-absorbing polymers to shield hair from blow-dryers or curling irons.
