Shaving is the process of removing hair by using a razor or other bladed implements. This action slices hair down to the level of the skin or slightly below.

People practice shaving for many different reasons. Men often shave facial hair to appear clean-shaven. Women may shave their legs or underarms. Both men and women sometimes remove hair from their chests, abdomens, or pubic areas.

Head shaving is also common. It is used in religious practices, the armed forces, and competitive sports like swimming or bodybuilding. Historically, head shaving has been used for purification or to show submission to authority. Today, people also shave their heads for cancer research fundraisers or because of medical treatments.

There are two primary methods for shaving: wet shaving and dry shaving. Wet shaving, also called manual shaving, involves using water and a lubricating agent.

This process usually begins by dousing the area in warm or hot water. This hydration is vital because fully hydrated hair requires about 65% less force to cut. After wetting the hair, a person applies a lathering agent like cream, gel, or soap. This lubrication helps prevent skin irritation known as razor burn.

Many people use a shaving brush with soft bristles to work the soap into a thick lather. This lather shows which areas have not been shaved yet. To avoid cuts, wet shaving is often done in multiple passes to gradually reduce the hair mass.

Manual shaving utilizes different types of tools. A straight razor has a single long blade.

Safety razors are a more modern category. These include single-edge, double-edge, injector, cartridge, and disposable razors. A double-edge razor uses a blade with sharp edges on opposite sides.

Cartridge razors, like those made by Wilkinson Sword or Gillette, house blades inside a plastic head. Some modern versions use three, five, or even seven blades to improve quality. Trimmers provide another option. A trimmer has two adjacent blades with teeth that oscillate to cut hair.

Trimmers are excellent for reducing long hair before a closer shave.

Dry shaving is typically performed with an electric razor.

This method does not require water or lather. Instead, the razor uses a set of oscillating or rotating blades. These blades are held behind a perforated metal screen. This screen prevents the blades from touching the skin directly. As the razor moves, hairs poke through the holes and are sliced by the blades. There are two main designs: rotary-type shavers use circular or cylindrical blades, while foil-type shavers use oscillating blades that move left and right.

While electric shaving is often quicker and may result in fewer ingrown hairs, it can be more expensive initially.

Human history shows a long evolution of shaving technology. Before modern razors, people used shells or sharp tools with water to remove hair. Around 3000 BC, copper tools allowed for the invention of copper razors.

In ancient times, Alexander the Great promoted shaving beards for his soldiers to prevent enemies from grabbing them. In the 18th century, Sheffield, England, became a center for manufacturing straight razors. The invention of the safety razor changed the industry significantly. In 1876, the Kampfe brothers patented the Star safety razor. Later, in 1895, King Camp Gillette invented the double-edged safety razor. This invention used cheap, disposable blades that could be replaced easily.

Technological shifts in the 20th century made shaving much more accessible. During World War I, the U.S. military issued Gillette kits to servicemen. In 1918 alone, the company sold 3.5 million razors and 32 million blades. After the war, Gillette lowered the price of razors from $5 to $1 to increase popularity. The Second World War caused another massive surge in production. The U.S. military ordered Gillette to dedicate its entire production to the war effort. During that time, 12.5 million razors and 1.5 billion blades were provided to soldiers. By 1974, Bic introduced the first wholly disposable razor. By 1980, disposable razors accounted for more than 27 percent of worldwide unit sales.

Despite its benefits, shaving can cause various side effects. These include cuts, abrasions, and skin irritation.

To minimize these risks, users should use fresh blades and apply plenty of lubrication. Shaving in the direction of the hair growth is also important. Some people use alum blocks or styptic pencils to close small cuts. Others apply aftershave lotions. These lotions often contain antiseptic agents like isopropyl alcohol to prevent infection. They can also act as astringents to reduce irritation or as moisturizers to soften the skin. Modern shaving remains a complex field of personal hygiene and tool engineering.
