He was the first actor of Asian descent to become a leading man in the United States and Europe. During the silent film era of the 1910s, he became a famous heartthrob. Many people found him very handsome and exciting to watch.

He was even one of the first male sex symbols in Hollywood. His fame was so great that he rivaled stars like Charlie Chaplin. He lived in a large, castle-style mansion in Hollywood for many years.

Hayakawa had a very special way of acting. He used a style influenced by Zen, which means "the absence of doing." Instead of using big gestures or loud poses, he was quiet and calm. This understated style helped him show deep feelings to the audience.

He wanted to act differently than the other actors of his time. Because he wanted more control, he started his own company called Haworth Pictures Corporation. He did not just act in his films. He also helped design, write, edit, and direct them.

His journey to stardom began with a difficult early life in Japan. He was born in 1886 in a village called Chikura. His family wanted him to be an officer in the Japanese Navy. However, an injury to his eardrum meant he could not join. This caused a hard time between him and his father. After this, he moved to the United States to study economics.

Some stories say he worked many odd jobs in California before acting. He might have been a dishwasher or an ice cream vendor.

Hayakawa's career saw many highs and lows. He became a huge star after the film The Cheat in 1915. In 1915, he earned $5,000 every single week. By 1920, his company had earned $2 million. He left Hollywood in 1922 due to business troubles and unfair feelings toward Japanese people. He traveled to London, France, and Russia to perform. He even performed a play for the King and Queen of Great Britain.

Even much later, Hayakawa returned to the big screen. He was famous for playing Colonel Saito in The Bridge on the River Kwai in 1957. This role earned him a nomination for an Academy Award. He also played a pirate captain in the movie Swiss Family Robinson.
