He wrote many things for children to enjoy. He also wrote funny plays and satirical fables. People loved his poems about a character named Uncle Styopa. Uncle Styopa was a very tall and friendly policeman. He was always ready to help people or rescue cats from trees. This character made Mikhalkov a very popular poet for children.

Writing a national anthem is a very big job. An anthem is a special song for a whole country. In 1942, the leader Joseph Stalin asked Mikhalkov to write new lyrics. Stalin wanted a song that felt very patriotic. Mikhalkov worked with a writer named El-Registan. They wrote words to go with music by Alexander Alexandrov. This became the State Anthem of the Soviet Union.

It was first used as the anthem on 1 January 1944.

History changed how the anthem was used over many years. After Stalin died in 1953, the lyrics were changed. They removed the parts that mentioned his name. Mikhalkov wrote new lyrics in 1970. These new words were finally made official in October 1977. Later, the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991. President Boris Yeltsin retired the old anthem at that time. Many years passed before the music came back.

In the year 2000, things changed again for the anthem. Vladimir Putin wanted to use the old music by Alexandrov. Mikhalkov was 87 years old at this time. He decided to write brand new lyrics for the music. These words became the National Anthem of Russia. The new anthem was officially adopted on 30 December 2000. This showed how much his work still mattered to the country.

Sergey Mikhalkov had a very busy and successful life. He won many important prizes like the Stalin Prize. He also received the Order of St. Andrew. This is the highest honor in Russia. His family was also very talented in the arts. His sons, Nikita Mikhalkov and Andrei Konchalovsky, became famous filmmakers. Sergey lived to be 96 years old. He died in Moscow on 27 August 2009.
