Seoul is the capital and largest city of South Korea.

The geography of Seoul is defined by its mountainous and hilly terrain. The large mountain known as Bukhansan sits on the northern edge of the city.
Human history in this area began many thousands of years ago. Evidence shows people lived here between 30,000 and 40,000 years ago. Around 4,000 B.C., residents lived in huts with lowered floors called umjip.
As time passed, different kingdoms fought for control of the region. The Baekje people founded a capital called Wiryeseong in 18 B.C. Later, the Silla kingdom took control of the area in 553. The city has held many different names throughout its long history. It was called Hanyang during the Northern and Southern States period. It was also known as Hanseong during the Joseon dynasty. The name "Seoul" is actually a native Korean word. It simply means "capital city."
The Joseon dynasty changed the city forever when it became the official capital. In 1394, the founder Yi Seong-gye chose Hanyang as the new center of power. The city was built to reflect the ideas of Korean Confucianism. Workers built a large Fortress Wall to surround the city.

Modern history brought both great challenges and rapid growth. In the early 20th century, the Empire of Japan occupied the city. They renamed it Keijō to avoid confusion with other names. The Korean War later brought fierce battles to the streets. The city changed hands four times and was left mostly in ruins.
Today, Seoul is a global center for business and entertainment. The population was over 10 million at its peak. As of 2024, the population stands at about 9.6 million residents. The city is home to 15 Fortune Global 500 companies. Major giants like Samsung, LG, and Hyundai have headquarters in the Seoul Capital Area.

Visitors to Seoul can see a mix of old and new landmarks. There are five UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the metropolitan area. These include the Changdeokgung palace and the Royal Tombs of the Joseon dynasty.
