During the Korean War, North Korean troops occupied Incheon on 4 July 1950. Later, UN troops conducted the Battle of Inchon to relieve pressure on the Pusan Perimeter. This landing was a decisive victory that allowed UN forces to launch an offensive northward. In more recent history, the city was a site for pro-democracy protests during the June Democratic Movement in 1987. 
Transportation in Incheon is highly developed for both people and cargo. Incheon International Airport is a massive regional air hub. In 2015, it was the 22nd busiest airport in the world by passenger traffic. It handled 49,412,750 passengers that year. 

Moving around the city involves several different transit systems. The Incheon Subway consists of two main lines. The first line connects to the Seoul subway system at Bupyeong station. The second line is an automated line that opened in July 2016.
