It was first published in 1811. At that time, the book was published without her name on it. The title page said "By A Lady" instead. The story is likely set between the years 1792 and 1797. It follows the lives of the Dashwood family. This includes a mother and her three daughters named Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret. The book matters because it explores how people handle big feelings and hard choices. It shows how different personalities react to the same problems.

The story follows the sisters as they face many life changes. First, the family must leave their large home in Sussex. They move to a much smaller cottage in Devonshire. This happens because the father dies and leaves them with very little money. The two older sisters, Elinor and Marianne, both deal with love and heartbreak. Elinor tries to use "sense," which means having good judgment and staying calm. Marianne uses "sensibility," which means having very strong and deep emotions. The plot shows how these two ways of living affect their happiness. They must learn to find a balance between their hearts and their minds.

Jane Austen began writing this story quite early in her life. She likely wrote the first draft around 1795 or 1797. When she started, she was only about 19 or 21 years old. Her first working title for the book was Elinor and Marianne. This name focused on the two sisters and their different personalities. Originally, she wrote the story in a style called epistolary. This means the story was told through letters written by the characters. Later, she changed it into a continuous narrative. This allowed her to explore the themes of the story even more deeply.

Many interesting details and people appear in the book. For example, Marianne falls in love with a man named John Willoughby. He later leaves her, which causes her to get a very bad fever. Another character is Colonel Brandon, who is thirty-five years old. He is attracted to the sixteen-year-old Marianne. Some people think the character of Colonel Brandon was inspired by Warren Hastings. He was the first Governor-General of India. Austen may have also been influenced by other books from her time. These included works by Adam Stevenson and Jane West. One of West's characters was even named Marianne.

Readers have shared many different views on this book for a long time. In 1812, some critics said the book was very realistic. They thought the characters were well-drawn and the plot was pleasing. Some early reviewers felt that Elinor's calm way of acting was the best lesson. They thought Marianne's big emotions brought her too much trouble. However, other readers in 1866 felt differently. They thought Marianne was a very sympathetic character. Today, we see how the book connects to real human experiences. It shows how people grow through suffering and how they learn from each other.
