One was the Jolof Empire, which was founded in the 13th or 14th century. It was a voluntary group of different states. Ndiadiane Ndiaye helped found this empire. It covered much of what is now Senegal. The empire eventually collapsed around 1549. This happened after a defeat involving the death of Lele Fouli Fak.

European powers arrived in the area starting in the 15th century. The Portuguese were the first to colonize the land.

Later, France gained control of Gorée Island in 1677. This island was used as a base for the slave trade. This was a very difficult and painful time for many people. In the 1850s, the French began to move onto the mainland. They took over many local kingdoms. Senegal finally became an independent republic in 1960.

At first, Senegal joined the Mali Federation. This union included the French Sudan. The Federation broke up in August 1960. Senegal and the Republic of Mali each became independent.
