The history of the region involves many different peoples. Ancient Berber, Niger-Congo, and Bafour peoples occupied the area. The Bafour were early inhabitants who moved from a nomadic life to agriculture. As the Sahara underwent desertification, they migrated southward. In the late 7th century, Arab tribes arrived during the Islamic conquests. These groups brought Islam, Arab culture, and the Arabic language.

France eventually established colonial rule in the late 19th century. A French administrator named Xavier Coppolani helped organize the territory. He used military pressure and strategic alliances to extend French rule. By 1904, Mauritania became part of French West Africa. It functioned as a protectorate and later as a colony. The French defeated the emirate of Adrar in 1912 to incorporate it. French rule introduced legal prohibitions against slavery and ended interclan warfare. However, 90% of the population remained nomadic during this period.
Mauritania gained independence from France in 1960. At that time, the capital of French West Africa moved from Dakar to Nouakchott.

Society in Mauritania is multiethnic and culturally diverse. The population of roughly 4.3 million people is divided into several groups. The Haratin, or "black moors," make up about 40% of the population. The Bidhan, or "white moors," comprise 30%. The remaining 30% consists of various sub-Saharan ethnic groups. Arabic is the official language of the state. However, Pulaar, Soninke, and Wolof are recognized as national languages. Most inhabitants are Sunni Muslims. The country is also a member of the Arab League, connecting it to the broader Arab world.
Despite having many natural resources, Mauritania remains a poor nation. The economy relies primarily on fishing and agriculture.
The name "Mauritania" has deep historical roots. It comes from Mauretania, a Latin name for an ancient region in the Maghreb. That ancient region was much further north than the modern country. It spread along the western half of the African Mediterranean coast. The term derives from the Greek and Roman name for the Berber Mauri people. This word is also the root of the name "Moors." Historically, Arab geographers called the land Bilad Chinqit, meaning "the land of Chinguetti."
