The geography of Dakar is shaped by the Atlantic Ocean. It has a tropical hot semi-arid climate. This is known as a BSh climate in technical terms. The weather follows a specific cycle of wet and dry seasons. The rainy season is short, lasting from July to October. The dry season covers the other eight months of the year. The city receives about 411 mm of rainfall annually.

The history of the peninsula began with the Lebu people. They are an aquacultural subgroup of the Wolof ethnic group. They settled the area no later than the 15th century.

In the 1780s, the Lebu people formed the Lebou Republic. This was a theocratic state led by Jaal Joop. They built long defensive walls out of laterite blocks. These walls stretched from Yoff to Hann to protect the peninsula. The French later annexed the republic in 1857. They renamed the military post Ndakaaru as Dakar. The French then promoted peanut cultivation on the mainland. This replaced the slave trade as a major economic activity. The peanut trade helped the mainland area grow rapidly. This transition changed the economy of the entire region.
During the colonial era, Dakar became a vital imperial center. The French invested heavily in the city's infrastructure. They built jetties to improve the port facilities. They also established a telegraph line along the coast. In 1885, they completed the Dakar-Saint-Louis railway. In 1902, Dakar became the capital of French West Africa. It replaced the city of Saint-Louis. Later, the Dakar-Niger railroad linked the city to Bamako. This line was built between 1906 and 1923. These developments made Dakar a major base for the French empire. It became a massive center for trade and military power.
The city also experienced significant social and political changes. During the colonial period, racial and social segregation occurred. This was often done under the guise of health and hygiene. After a plague in 1914, many Africans were moved to the Médina. This created a separation from the Plateau district.
Today, Dakar is a massive and diverse metropolitan area. The population was about 4.0 million in 2023. The city is home to many international communities. There is a large Lebanese community that arrived in the 1920s. There are also many Moroccan, Mauritanian, and Guinean residents. The city is also a major center for global events. It will host the 2026 Summer Youth Olympics.
