Self-reference happens when something talks about itself.

This can be a sentence, a math rule, or even an idea. An idea is self-referential if it points back to its own traits.

Sometimes, self-reference creates a puzzle called a paradox. For example, a sentence might say, "This sentence is false." If it is true, then it must be false. This makes it very hard to solve! Philosophers have studied these puzzles for a long time. One old story is about a man from Crete who said all Cretans are liars.

People use self-reference in many different fields. In computer science, a program can read its own instructions. This is called reflection. In art, a painter might draw a hand that is drawing itself.

Some art even shows the tools used to make it. Even in myths, a dragon named Ouroboros is shown eating its own tail. This shows the cycle of self-reference in a single image.
