Have you ever heard someone say two things that cannot both be true? This is called a contradiction.

A contradiction happens when a statement conflicts with a fact. It can also happen when a statement conflicts with itself. One famous rule says a thing cannot be two ways at once. It cannot belong and not belong to something at the same time.

Math experts use contradictions to solve hard puzzles. This is called a proof by contradiction. They start by assuming a new idea is true. Then, they show this idea leads to a contradiction. Since a contradiction is impossible, the new idea must actually be false. This helps them prove what is really true.

In the past, a thinker named Plato wrote about this. In a story, a man named Dionysodorus said there is no such thing as a false opinion. But Socrates showed him a problem. If it is impossible to tell a lie, how can anyone ever prove a lie is wrong? This shows why we need the idea of contradiction to find the truth.
