Sedative

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A sedative is a substance that helps calm a person. It works by slowing down the brain. These drugs affect the central nervous system. That is the part of the body that controls how we act.

Most sedatives work by increasing GABA activity. GABA is a chemical in the brain that helps us relax. Some drugs are also called hypnotics. These are drugs used to help a person fall asleep. Because these two types overlap, doctors often call them sedative-hypnotic drugs.

How do these drugs work inside the body? They interact with brain activity to cause a deceleration. This means they slow down how the brain functions.

Most of these substances affect a neurotransmitter called GABA. A neurotransmitter is a chemical that carries signals between brain cells. By increasing GABA activity, the drugs produce relaxing effects. This helps reduce irritability or excitement in a person.

Doctors and veterinarians use these drugs for many medical jobs. They might give them to a patient to lower anxiety. This is helpful during painful or scary tests.

They are used before surgery or during procedures like an endoscopy. An endoscopy is a test where doctors look inside the body. They can also help before a cardiac catheterization. This is a procedure involving the heart. While they do not stop pain, they help patients stay calm.

Using these drugs can be very risky for many people. Some people may become dependent on them. This means the body feels it needs the drug to work.

Taking too much can be very dangerous. Mixing sedatives with alcohol is also very unsafe. This combination can cause a person to stop breathing. A study from the United States found a high number of issues. In 2011, sedatives were a leading source of bad drug events in hospitals. In 1998, U.S. poison centers reported 70,982 sedative exposures.

There are other serious side effects to know about. Some people might experience amnesia. Amnesia is when a person cannot remember things. The drug Lorazepam can cause this type of memory loss.

Other people might have paradoxical reactions. This means the drug does something unexpected. Instead of calming down, a person might become aggressive or violent. This happens in about 5% of cases, according to Malcolm Lader. Long-term use can even change how a person sleeps. It can decrease deep sleep, which is the part that helps us feel rested.
