It sits entirely inside the country of Turkey. This sea connects the Black Sea to the Aegean Sea. It also separates the European and Asian sides of Turkey. The sea is named after Marmara Island. That island is famous for its marble.

Many people live near this water. About one-third of the people in Turkey live in this area. Large cities like Istanbul sit on its coast.

The sea has two main groups of islands. The Princes' Islands are in the north. The Marmara Islands are in the south.

The sea faces some hard challenges. A fault line runs under the water. This can cause big earthquakes. In 1999, a large earthquake hit the shores.

Pollution has also been a problem. A thick and sticky substance called mucilage appeared in 2021. This substance lasted for six months. It made it hard for fish to live and for people to fish. The sea is a very busy and important place.
