Screaming

A scream is a loud and intense vocalization. It occurs when air passes through the vocal cords with much greater force than during normal speech. This physical process allows any creature with lungs to produce the sound.

Humans and animals use screams to express strong emotions. These emotions can include fear, pain, annoyance, surprise, joy, excitement, or anger. Because it is often an instinctive reflex, a scream serves as a powerful tool for immediate expression.

Scientists have studied how the human brain responds to these sounds. Research by Arnal and colleagues shows that human screams possess a unique acoustic property called roughness. This specific quality of sound selectively activates the auditory brain and the amygdala. The amygdala is a deep structure in the brain responsible for processing danger.

This biological link explains why screams can feel so urgent and alarming to listeners.

In the animal kingdom, screaming can serve biological and social functions. For example, studies on monkeys have shown that screaming can assist in reproductive success. When female monkeys scream during sexual encounters, it helps the male ejaculate. Research by Gayle Brewer and Colin Hendrie found that in about 86 percent of cases where females screamed, there was a 59 percent success rate. In contrast, the success rate was only 2 percent when no screaming occurred. In humans, similar research suggests women may use screaming during intercourse to encourage their partners.

Psychologists have also explored the deeper meaning of the scream. Arthur Janov, in his book *The Primal Scream*, proposed that screaming is a way to confront suppressed pain from childhood trauma. He described the primal scream as a distinctive, involuntary, and low, rattling sound. Janov believed that expressing this primal pain could help cure neurosis. He also viewed screaming as a nascent language for infants. For a baby, a scream is a primitive way to communicate needs like food, pain, or love.

Art history features the scream as a profound symbol of human experience. The most famous example is *The Scream*, a series of works created by Edvard Munch between 1893 and 1910. Munch called these compositions *Der Schrei der Natur*, or "The Scream of Nature."

His paintings depict a figure with an agonized expression against a tumultuous orange sky. Many art historians consider this work an icon of modern art. It captures the intense, internal feelings that words often fail to describe.

Music provides many different ways to utilize the scream as a technical tool. In rock, punk, and heavy metal, vocalists develop demanding guttural or growled sounds. Musician David N. Green categorized these into four distinct types. He identified the harmonic scream, which has a defined pitch, and the lyrical scream, which relates to the song's lyrics. He also noted the "true" or "pure" scream, which is atonal and lacks a clear pitch. In Spanish flamenco, the style known as *cante jondo*, or "deep sing," uses the cry and the scream as rudimentary methods of expression.

Beyond music, the scream is a common element in performance and media. In cinema, the scream is a frequent trope in horror and disaster films, where certain actresses are known as "scream queens."

Performance artists also use the sound to explore human limits. Marina Abramović used screaming in her work *AAA AAA*, where she and Ulay screamed at each other with increasing volume. This demonstrates how the scream can move from a simple biological reflex to a complex tool for artistic connection and power.
