A scream is a very loud vocal sound. It happens when air passes through the vocal cords with great force.

This is much stronger than our regular way of speaking. Any creature that has lungs can make this sound. Humans and animals both use screams to show big feelings. We might scream because of fear, pain, or anger. We can also scream when we feel joy or excitement.

There are many ways a scream works in the body. Scientists found that screams have a special quality called roughness. This sound specifically activates parts of the brain that look for danger.

In some animals, like monkeys, screaming can even help with biological tasks. For example, female monkeys scream during sex to help the male succeed. Studies showed this helped about 59 percent of the time. Without the scream, the success rate was only 2 percent.

Many thinkers have studied why we make these sounds. A man named Arthur Janov wrote a book called The Primal Scream. He believed that screaming could help people deal with old pain from childhood. He described these screams as low, rattling, and involuntary sounds.

He also thought that screaming could be a way to find power. For babies, Janov believed screaming was their very first language. It is how they tell us they need food or love.

Artists and musicians have used the scream for a long time. The famous painter Edvard Munch created many versions of a work called "The Scream."

He called these works "The Scream of Nature" between 1893 and 1910. In music, singers use different styles of screaming. Rock and metal singers use deep, growling sounds. In Spanish flamenco music, singers use a style called "cante jondo." This means "deep sing," and it uses screams to show serious feelings.

Even in art and movies, the scream is a powerful tool. In horror films, actresses who scream a lot are often called "scream queens."

Some performers use it to show strength or to connect with others. For example, Marina Abramović used screaming in her performance art. In one piece, she and Ulay screamed louder and louder while facing each other. This shows how a simple sound can be used to express almost anything.
