Scoliosis is a condition where the spine curves to the side.

Instead of being straight, the spine may look like an S or a C. This curve happens in three dimensions. It can affect how a person moves or breathes. Most people with scoliosis feel back pain. This pain can get worse as people get older.

Many cases are idiopathic. This means the cause is unknown. About 65% of cases are idiopathic. Other cases come from things like muscle problems or bone growth issues. It often happens during growth spurts before puberty. It is more common in females than males.

Doctors use X-rays to find the curve. They measure it using the Cobb angle. This is the angle between two lines on the X-ray.

There are many ways to help. Doctors might watch a small curve for a while. For larger curves, a person might wear a brace. A brace is a tool that fits the body. It must be worn every day until growth stops.

Some people may need surgery. This can help fix very large curves. Special exercises can also help keep the core strong.
