Anatomical variation

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Most people have the same body parts. But bodies can be different. We call these differences anatomical variations. These are not sicknesses. They are just normal ways to be built. Most people do not feel any pain from them.

These changes happen for many reasons. Often, they come from your genes. Genes are the instructions for your body. Variations can change the size or shape of a part. They can change where a part sits. Some people might even miss a part entirely.

Muscles change a lot between people. Some people have two muscles instead of one. The palmaris longus is a muscle in the forearm. Some people do not have it at all. The plantaris is a muscle in the leg. It can also be missing.

Bones can be different too. Most people have five lumbar vertebrae. These are the bones in the lower back. Some people have four or six. Even lungs can have different shapes. Doctors use X-rays to see these changes. This helps them know a part is just different, not sick.
